Description
Seachem Purigen®
Premium synthetic organic filtration resin for freshwater and marine aquariums, designed to remove soluble and insoluble organic waste, control ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, and polish water to unparalleled clarity.
Key Features
- Highest organic removal capacity – removes nitrogenous waste faster and more completely than other products.
- Enhanced surface area – spherical and macroreticular beads provide far greater usable surface area than standard spherical resins.
- Color-change indicator – beads darken as they exhaust, signaling when regeneration is needed.
- Regenerable – fully restores adsorption capacity with a bleach-based procedure.
- Minimal impact on trace elements – preserves essential water chemistry.
- Raises redox potential, improving overall water quality.
Advantages
Selectivity
- Specifically targets nitrogenous organics from fish, corals, and plants.
- Ignores simple elemental compounds, ensuring highly efficient organic removal.
Capacity
- Vast surface area from macro-porous beads allows 500% greater performance than competing resins.
Regeneration
- Exhausted Purigen® (dark brown/black) can be fully regenerated using bleach and dechlorinator solutions.
- Brine-based regeneration is ineffective for organic removal – Purigen® requires oxidation of organics.
Sizes
- 100 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL, 1 L, 2 L, 4 L
Directions for Use
- Rinse before use.
- Place in a fine mesh filter bag (≤180 micron) such as Seachem The Bag™.
- Position in high-flow areas: canister filter, media chamber, box filter, or trickle filter.
- Each 250 mL treats up to 1,000 L (250 US gallons) for up to 6 months.
- Discoloration to dark brown/black indicates exhaustion.
Regeneration Procedure
- Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metallic container in a well-ventilated area.
- Rinse thoroughly, then soak 8 hours in a dechlorinator solution (4 tbsp Prime® per cup water).
- Rinse well. For freshwater, optionally soak 4 hours in buffer solution (2 tbsp buffer per cup).
- Confirm no detectable bleach or chlorine remains before reuse.
Caution: Some slime coat products can permanently foul beads. Do not reuse if bleach odor persists.
